Ciao a tutti!
Hi everyone, and welcome to my blog! I would like to introduce myself as Isabella – an 18 year old aspiring performing artist from Belleville, Ontario. Graduating from Centennial Secondary School with honours, top marks in select courses, an Arts Plus certificate, and scholarships, I also graduated with countless hours of community service, performance training, awards, and instructing, retail and restaurant experience. Last year, I was selectively chosen by Dance Ontario as the 2015 recipient of their Jacque Foesier Youth Dance Award. A week after my reign ended this past January, I earned a new honourable title. Being titled Miss Teenage South Central Ontario 2016 on January 24th, I will be proudly representing my hometown in the Miss Teenage Canada pageant this upcoming July.
Passions and Hobbies
When we are little, we are often asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?“. Some people say superman, some say pop star, and some say Prime Minister of Canada. My dream was always to become a professional dancer. I have had a passion for dance since I was introduced to it at four years old. Competing with the Ireland Academy of Dance, and then training in the Professional Training Program at Quinte Ballet School of Canada (QBSC), I graduated from QBSC with Distinction. I am currently enrolled in George Brown College’s Dance Performance Studies program particularly streaming in ballet. Following graduation next year, I aspire to join a contemporary ballet company.
On top of my training, I offer my knowledge to the next generation of dancers. This is my fifth year instructing at the Ireland Academy of Dance. Last year, I was invited to choreograph for their Performance Dancetroop and am honoured to have won two choreography awards within the season. I am happy to be choreographing for this talented team again this year. In fact, I just returned from their first competition of the season! I want to congratulate my students and all other team members for their successful performance this weekend!
I promise I’m not a one-way street; I have a passion for more than just dance! I love singing (especially in the shower where the acoustics are exceptional), drawing, choreographing, and acting. Non-arts related, I love to cook, bake, write, daydream, play sports, spend time with family and friends, travel, and learn new things! I also absolutely love volunteering – it makes me feel purposeful, joyous, and I get the opportunity to meet new people. I’m also always up for a good challenge. One new challenge that I’ve recently tackled is learning the Italian language. My opening statement translates to “hello to all”; I wanted to share with you a little bit of what I’ve learned recently. My family is Italian, and speak the language daily. It is such a beautiful language to listen to, and I think it’s about time that I learn to speak it as well. I have visited my family’s hometown of Lanciano, Italy, three times now. Each time I go, I learn a little more! I’m hoping that the next time I visit, I’ll surprise all of the friends and family that I have there with fluent vocabulary.
I can’t believe it has almost been one month since my reign began… there is only 11 months left! I plan to attend events for purposes such as emceeing, public speaking, promoting my platform, etc. I would love to make appearances throughout the entire South Central Ontario area.
My preparations for the pageant itself have already started! Leading to regionals, I held many fundraisers for Cardiac Kids. Now as I prepare for nationals, I will be fundraising for Miss Teenage Canada’s official charity: Free The Children. Night and day my mom and I are scrolling through dress websites, bookmarking the evening gowns that best suit my personality. Plans for the talent competition of the pageant are underway! To be proactive, I have been working out a schedule for the final weeks leading to nationals, especially considering I plan to attend a summer dance intensive during that time. This will definitely be a busy, but worthwhile and super exciting summer!
I am in the works of planning my fundraiser events, but am always open to suggestions! What sort of event would attract you to attend? Comment your fundraiser suggestion below!
The unwritten pressure of being slender as a dancer began developing in the mid-1920’s. Considering I was a vulnerable youth caught in this evolution with a dream to become a performing artist, I unfortunately found myself in a cycle of disordered eating habits. Now being recovered, I reflect and understand how insecurities interfere with performance. As a titleholder who is strongly tied to the arts, I want to raise awareness on the idea that your body does not define the artist in you! Through experience, I learned that a confident performance impacts an audience regardless of physique. By encouraging this to everyone, I believe the stress caused by insecurities will be eased and more artists would continue to follow their passion.
My Birthday Wish
Next Sunday, February 28th, is my birthday. I’m not asking for a new phone, a car, a shopping spree, or a vacation to a tropical place. Instead, I am asking for my community’s support with my journey towards Miss Teenage Canada!
Fans get the opportunity to vote for their favourite Miss Teenage Canada hopeful. The delegate with the most votes is awarded the People’s Choice Award and automatically advances into the top 20. My Facebook page is currently “liked” by just over 200 people. My wish is that before I head to sleep on my birthday, I read that my page is supported by at least 500 people. I invite you, your family, your friends, and even your pets if they have accounts, to support me by liking my Facebook page! The more followers I have, the more that I can explain the voting process to.
Considering there are many costs involved with participating in this pageant, I am seeking the support from the community and businesses I represent. On my birthday, and only for that day, I will create a fundraiser website providing people the opportunity to donate. Donations received that day will go towards covering my pageant expenses. The link to the site will be blogged closer to the date. All donations, regardless of amount, are greatly appreciated!
Everything and anything to do with my reign as Miss Teenage South Central Ontario 2016 will be published on this blog. I will be publishing a new post at least once a week, so visit regularly to keep in the loop! I invite you to also follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Don’t be shy to leave a comment below – whether it’s a fundraiser suggestion or a friendly hello (I’m a poet and didn’t know it)! I would love to hear from you!
Buona giornata (Good day)
